Get your kids to a garden, with the garden they'll grow
They'll learn to go easy and learn to live slow
Just get your kids to a garden, with the garden they'll grow
They'll learn to go easy
To go easy on the earth, lightly on the water
Remember this place is for your sons and daughters
Easy on the earth, lightly on the water
Remember who this place is for
Get your kids to a river, with the river they'll flow
It'll teach em' how to paddle, teach em’ how to row
Get your kids to a river, with the river they'll flow
It'll take em' where they need to go
To go easy on the earth, lightly on the water
Remember this place is for your sons and daughters
Easy on the earth, lightly on the water
Remember who this place is for
Ima' go easy, easy, easy (call and response)
Let em' see their reflection wherever they go
In the rain water, flood water, sleet, hail, snow
Let em' see their reflection wherever they go
Get your kids to a garden, with the garden they'll grow
They'll learn to go easy and learn to live slow
Just get your kids to a garden, with the garden they'll grow
They'll learn to go easy
To go easy on the earth, lightly on the water
Remember this place is for your sons and daughters
Easy on the earth, lightly on the water
Remember who this place is for
Ima' go easy, easy, easy (call and response)
Go easy on the earth, lightly on the water
Remember this place is for your sons and daughters
Easy on the earth, lightly on the water
Remember who this place is for

Sons and Daughters was recorded on Lopez Island, in the San Juan Island group, just south of the Canada/USA Border. Located in the territory of many Coast Salish Nations and Tribes, Lopez Island is a hub for social action. Between 2016 and mid 2017 I met a number of inspired people from Lopez Island at actions back home in BC and felt compelled to travel to the island to meet more. It turns out Lopez Island is home to tons of amazing activists, artists, farmers and teachers, all keen to contribute to an earth-based revolution.
To me, recording a song on Lopez Island was important because it created a bridge across an international border, like a hand reaching out, connecting two communities and perhaps sparking a cooperative effort. If we wish to protect the Salish Sea – the Orca, the salmon, the forests and rivers - then we must do so through cross border collaboration and apply international strategies. The fish, whales and water see no borders, so we too must see none.
