about

'An Opportunity' is an attitude and a perspective. It was written over the last year of my life and was inspired by the people and places I traveled to during the Little Rivers Matter Too tours and my time in Paris during COP21. I wrote this collection of songs in hopes that it will counteract the manufactured hatred, political corruption and environmental collapse that plagues my generation and those to come. I wrote it to inspire those paddling in the same direction and to bring to light some of the fundamental issues holding our society back from being truly free and brilliant. Seeing our future as An Opportunity is critical if we wish to address the challenges that we face as individuals, communities and a global society. It's about being optimistic and embracing the challenges we face with hope and immunity.

'An Opportunity' was recorded on Salt Spring Island at Old Growth Studios with Daryl Chonka. Daryl is the man. You'll hear it on the record. He took us to new sonic heights and challenged in news ways. The album art work was designed by Jasper Snow Rosen, also from Salt Spring Island.

Track Name: I Can Feel It
Can you feel it coming?
The young kids are gunning
The bankers are running
I can feel it coming

Can you feel it growing?
Like a river flowing
There’s no sign of slowing
I can feel it growing

Can you feel it?
Track Name: Fight For Tomorrow
Hope, it can come in all shapes and all sizes
From all people, all places, sunsets and sunrises

Carry on my friends, forget bout’ the sorrow
Carry on my friends in this fight for tomorrow

Surely there’s hope in the hears of the broken
And love in the words of all those who’ve awoken

Carry on my friends, forget bout’ the sorrow
Carry on my friends in this fight for tomorrow

Surely it’s love that’ll douse all the hatred
The future it’s yours, go on and take it

Carry on my friends, forget bout’ the sorrow
Carry on my friends in this fight for tomorrow

Surely one day we’ll all wake up together
The weight of the world will feel light as a feather

Carry on my friends, forget bout’ the sorrow
Carry on my friends in this fight for tomorrow

Hope, it can come in all shapes and all sizes
From all people, all places, sunsets and sunrises

Carry on my friends, forget bout’ the sorrow
Carry on my friends in this fight for tomorrow
Track Name: Don't Tell the Taxman
People put their money in my guitar case
I give it all away to make the world a better place
I can’t give it to the government they’ll put it in the tar sands
But shush, quiet, don’t tell the taxman

People give me money just to sing em’ a tune
It’s a quarter in December, a nickel in June
I can’t give it to the government they’ll fill another gas can
But shush, quiet, don’t tell the taxman

Taxes are a funny thing, we pay them all the time
Give your government a dollar, they’ll give you back a dime
Except if you’re wealthy, you can break all the laws
Give your money a vacation, send it down to Panama

Property’s a funny thing, we like to draw lines
That side is yours, this side is mine
Except we stole it from the Indians and never gave it back
But shush, quiet, won’t talk about that
Track Name: Big Blue Sea
I sleep when I’m stoned and wake up high
There’s no good reason for me to lie
And I’ve done some thinking in my time
A lot about loving, a little about life

I’m growing tired of feeling small
I live in the spring, forget about fall
I hear the end is coming, death and all
I live in the spring, I forget about fall

I look to the water and what did I see
A faceless reflection looking back at me
And it’s not because I lack personality
I’ve just been here for a while, I’m the big blue sea

I get lost sometimes thinking about you
Thinking all that we’ve and all that we’ll do

I’m growing tired of feeling small
I live in the spring, forget about fall
I hear the end is coming, death and all
I live in the spring, I forget about fall

I get lost sometimes thinking about you
Thinking all that we’ve and all that we do
Track Name: An Opportunity
We’re in the middle of a crisis on a climatic scale
The storms are getting stronger, wind, rain and hail
As the politicians lie we’re all set to fail
Unless the people rise up and love prevails

So demand an end to the bombs and invasions
To oil, gas and coal and corporate persuasion
Where the wealthy stay rich cause of tax evasions
Time to open up our eyes complete the equation

Give power to the people, the people fight back
Enough with the division, nobody needs that
Enough with words like White, Asian and Black
We all came from Africa and that’s a fact

Rise up together, united we stand
To overgrow a system that threatens our land
With simple things like community, love and unity
Turn this fight into an opportunity

We’ll stop pipelines with frontlines, fracking with feet
Drills rigs with kayaks, hatred with beats
Save our brothers and sisters from the rising seas
And give shelter and food to all the refugees

Then we’ll starting building a world we’re proud to call home
One that’s full of gardens where no one’s alone
Where the rivers run freely and the grasses grow
And when we walk down the street we actually say hello

Like when somebody needs help we lend a hand
When someone’s different we try to understand
When we’ve got more than others we give what we can
Only take what we need, share what we have

Rise up together, united we stand
To overgrow a system that threatens our land
With simple things like community, love and unity
Turn this fight into an opportunity

At the end of the day it comes right now to you
You gonna sit back, watch and let the lies push through?
Or you gonna stand up, fight back, join the crew
Put the future in our pouch like a kangaroo

See I used to worried that we wouldn’t succeed
That somehow we’d lose to hands of greed
But it’s becoming quite clear that the people are free
Turning I and mine to ours and we

And I’ve met thousands of em’ from all over the planet
They get what I’m saying, see we all understand that
The changes are coming, the movement is here
There’s only one way forward and it’s without fear

Rise up together, united we stand
To overgrow a system that threatens our land
With simple things like community, love and unity
Turn this fight into an opportunity
Track Name: With You, To Be
I’d cross an ocean, I’d sail a sea
I’d climb a mountain, with you, to be
With you, to be, I’d sail a sea

I am not frightened, I am not lost
I am not worried how far across
Between you and me, I’d sail a sea

There ain’t no river I wouldn’t ford
There ain’t no valley I’d stand before
There ain’t no distance to keep you from me
Cause’ I’d cross an ocean, I’d sail a sea

I’d save a river, I’d plant a tree
Cause’ I love the future like you love me
Like you love me, I’d sail a sea
Track Name: No River
I walked down to the water, stuck my feet into the sand
It helps me with my troubles, helps me understand
Without it I am nothing, it’s really all that I have
Without we are nothing, no river no man

If you’re ever feeling lonely, I’m right here
Walk on down to the water, see it all so clear

As I’m growing outward I put some time into my roots
For when the wind starts a’ blowin, the storms pushing through

Without it I am nothing, it’s really all that I have
Without we are nothing, no river no man

If you’re ever feeling lonely, I’m right here
Walk on down to the water, see it all so clear

I walked down to the water, stuck my feet into the sand
It helps me with my worries, helps me understand
Without it I am nothing, it’s really all that I have
Without we are nothing, no river no man

If you’re ever feeling lonely, I’m right here
Walk on down to the water, see it all so clear
Track Name: Waves
The time has come for you to rise up
But how long? How long? How long?

We cannot stay with you this way
But how long? How long? How long?

If you say, then I’ll stand by you

In the interest of staying afloat
I get up and try again
Cause I’m worried that if I don’t
I’ll be calling my own end

The time is here so go forth, no fear
How long? How long? How long?

There’s no time to waste, it’s already too late
How long? How long? How long?

If you say, then I’ll stand by you

In the interest of staying afloat
I get up and try again
Cause I’m worried that if I don’t
I’ll be calling my own end

It comes in waves
It comes in waves

It comes in waves, yes, and one day, it’ll all just go away
